Wood stoves are a tremendous investment for families trying to save on heating costs. They can also be a great method for exercise as thousands of people head out every year to saw and split and collect fuel to keep their fire burning all year. However, wood stoves are very specific devices which have limitations that need to be respected in order to keep them burning properly and safely for years to come.

1) Never use artificial fireplace logs made of wax or sawdust. These contain compounds and chemicals which should not be involved in the wood stove system.

2) Never burn treated wood or paint as the chemicals which are released are highly toxic. Also they will quickly corrode your catalyst and other materials in your heating system.

3) Also, never use any starter liquid to get your fire going. Lighter fluid, kerosene, or gasoline all have chemicals which again will damage your stove over time. Use black and white newspaper and a match as color newspaper can also damage the system over time.

4) Use dry, seasoned wood. Three or four year hardwood is best as it will burn slowly and hot. Wet and green wood will lower the temperature of your fire, causing smoke and combustibles to condense onto the inner surface of your chimney. This creosote, as it is called, is toxic and flammable, making it very dangerous.

5) Clean out ash regularly. Also have your chimney swept to remove debris and creosote build up yearly. This will keep your system working smoothly and safely.

6) Keep burnable materials away from the stove area (rugs, carpet, etc…)
